Krakow (Cracow) apartments offer real alternative to pricey hotels. There are few well established companies offering range of apartments in Krakow historical Old Town and Kazimierz (Jewish Quarter). Main three companies offering more than 10 apartments are: SODISPAR Aparthotel & Apartments in Krakow Old Town, Warsaw based Old Town Apartments and TWW Sp. z o.o.. They have many years of experience and offer good customer service.
As renting an apartment in Krakow is getting more and more popular, you can also find private owners (often foreigners) offering their apartments. They usually have one or two apartments in their apartment building along with council tenants and other owners who live there. Sometimes you can find good deal but it is usually better to have recommendation from somebody who stayed there.
You should ask about the neighbourhood (noise from the street, tram line, pub or bar in the area), on which floor is located and what kind of staircase leads to the apartment (steep, through the courtyard, etc.), are windows to the courtyard (quiet, but maybe view is not very nice) or to the street (noisy). Lift in the Old Town is a luxury so beware of apartments on the third/fourth floor. Verify which channels are available on Satellite TV. If you want to bring your laptop make sure that Internet connection is available (LAN). Ask if your family or friends can call you to the apartment as calls to your mobile phone will be very costly (you have to pay when you receive calls - see phones for details. Ask how many sets of keys you get, if hair dryier, iron & ironing board, washing machine, dish washer, electric kettle are available. If you are coming by car ask exact prices and distance to guarded parkings and add it to overall price. And finally verify if you can check-in any time and what happens if owners mobile phone is not answering...
Renting apartment in Krakow may be challenging especially in a high season (April-October and nearly impossible for Christmas & New Year - book far in advance, even 3-4 months for New Year and 1-2 months in summer). Be flexible with the dates and your travel arrangements - you may stay 1-2 nights in Zakopane where prices are lower and you can easily get affordable double room in hotel/pension for 20-50 EURO per night. If you are arriving on the overnight train from Prague, Berlin or Vienna ask in advance what time you can check-in or leave your luggage. If you fly-in to Warsaw after 7pm beware that last express train to Krakow usually departs at 8pm and connecting flight arrives to Krakow after 11pm - make sure that you can easily get your keys to the apartment. When booking your room (apartment in Krakow) you may also ask about airport / train station transfers as some companies offer these services.
