There are at least 2 types of public phones working with phone cards with magnetic stripe or phone cards with electronic chip. Coin operated public phones (common in US) practically do not exist in Poland. You may also use calling cards like TELEPIN, TELESWIAT, TELE GROSIK or others to make calls. They usually have 0800 free access number which you can dial from any public phone (remember to press star ket "*" to get touch tone) and then you enter PIN code and call the number you wish to call. These calling cards also have local access numbers for major cities in Poland (free number actually eats up units from your card aprox. 0,1US per min., local access number is 0,1US for 3 min.). Normally to call abroad you dial 00 + country code + phone number (sometimes you have to omit leading 0). Mobile phones in Poland starts with 06 or 05. Cities have 2 digit code - for Warsaw you usually call 022 and for Krakow 012.
If you want to call to Poland from abroad you omit 0 from mobile phone numbers and local numbers eg. 00 48 12 4222222 is phone number to taxi company (4222222) in Krakow (12) in Poland (48). Attention: if you are calling from US or CANADA you have to replace leading 00 with 011 so that the phone number looks like this: 011 48 12 4222222. Calling to mobile phone numbers from abroad is usually much more expensive. You dial 00 48 6xx xxx xxx or 00 48 5xx xxx xxx
There are 3 mobile phone operators in Poland: ERA GSM 6xy (y=0, 2, 4, 6, 8); PLUS GSM 6xy (y=1, 3, 5, 7, 9) and IDEA 5xy - when you want to call to mobile phone when in Poland you have to add 0 at the beginnning: 06xy xxx xxx or 05xx xxx xxx
You may send text messages (SMS) from your mobile phone when in Poland or any place in the world using international phone number: +48 6xy xxx xxx or +48 5xx xxx xxx - plus sign + sometimes may be replaced with 00
If you travel with your mobile phone to Poland verify with your operator if you have roaming switched on so that your phone works in Poland. Remember that when you receive call in Poland you have to pay for it (prices may be different depending which Polish GSM operator you use, but it is usually quite expensive - roughly 0,50 EURO/min.)
